John grew up in Chicago and graduated from Lane Tech High School. A Corporal in the 104th infantry, 26th division during World War II when he was captured outside of Nancy, France on October 11, 1944. After landing in Normandy his regiment launched out on patrol and came across a German soldier in a bell tower. A Sergeant and friend of John’s was first to be killed, second in line was his Lieutenant friend who was also killed. John was third in line when his regiment surrendered. Later in life John said he was the lucky one and should have also died as the sorrow of that day stayed quietly with him his whole life. After being captured, the Germans took him into town and he was given old clothes and wooden shoes. They put him and other prisoners into a box car with no food or water for three days before sending them to Mossberg Germany. After arriving to Stalag 7A prisoner of war camp he was given a bowl of potato soup and bread as this would be his diet for the next 7 months. Most days they were shuffled into a box car and railed into towns to clean up after the bombings by removing debris and sadly what was beneath. Once the Red Cross started to send care packages they would save the cigarettes and candy to trade to the town’s people for food and compassion. One day on June 9th, 1945 the US prisoners of Stalug 7A were taken to a tent with a red cross symbol on top and were told help was coming as the Germans took off. Soon the US Army arrived to rescue them and return them home. The family would like to to thank Hines VA Hospital for the wonderful care John received, especially Annette Sheperd, Elizabeth Bernstein, Dr. Youngsook Park, Dr. Lucy Munoz,Nennette Ramil and many more.
